Anchorages 6

These anchorages cover our travels from mid-Florida northward in Spring 2005.

(6) Daytona, Florida

29° 14’ north
81° 01.37’ west

This spot is just north of the northernmost central Daytona bridge, on the east side.

Good wind/wave protection, except wakes from passing boats. Good holding in 7 feet of very dirty water. Very muddy bottom.

No services. Just a convenience stop.

(8) Saint Augustine, Florida

29° 53.72’ north
81° 18.5’ west

Good holding in 25 feet of water (near channel; shallower closer in). Very strong tidal current. Beware of boats on rope rode or with two anchors out.

Nearby city marina provides dinghy dock and showers (for a fee). All services available, but most are not within walking distance.

This anchorage on the north side of the Bridge of Lyons offers convenient ocean access, but beware of currents in the entrance channel.

(8) Fernandina, Florida

30° 40.37’ north
81° 28’ west

This anchorage off the town dock experiences very strong tidal current and tidal range up to six feet. Quite deep on north end: 25 feet.

Beware fuel dock: northbound tide runs under it and can unexpectedly slam your boat into it, or pin it to it.

Services available, but require some walking.

(6) New Teakettle Creek, GA (ICW mile 647)

31° 27.146’ north
81° 18.261’ west

Not much here. Just a creek off the ICW where you can anchor in 20 feet of water (good holding) for the night.

Creek is very wide: anchor in middle to guard against wind-shift and current swing.

No services of any kind. Beware biting insects.

(8) North end, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina (ICW mile 554)

32° 15.435’ north
80° 44.556’ west

A scenic spot in deep water (20’ plus, but beware the 7’ tidal range) a half mile from a marina and fuel dock.

Easy access to Port Royal Sound to the north. Good holding in murky water. A few biting bugs. Local boats use this passage: wakes possible in daytime.

(7) Church Creek, South Carolina (ICW mile 486)

32° 42.44’ north
80° 10.6’ west

Not much here, but good holding (mud) in 17 feet of murky water (high tide...6.5 foot range) for convenience stop.

Note: when tidal current opposes wind, boats swing in unpredictable directions. Allow plenty of room.
