We are about to embark on a different type of journey. After “roughing it” in scores of remote places in dozens of countries, we are going to splurge on a cruise.
The Crystal Serenity, rated numerous t imes as the world’s best cruise ship, departs Miami, Florida January 4, 2011. It will take us to the Cayman Islands, then to Cartagena, Columbia and on to transit the Panama Canal.
The final two stops before reaching Los Angeles, California are Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
We spend much of early 2000 in La Penita, near Puerto Vallarta. (See Log).
It seems odd to be packing formal clothes, since we’ve worn nothing but shorts and walking shoes in most of our adventures.
In planning this somewhat indulgent trip, we considered several cruise lines -- and were briefly booked on a Holland America ship (until we read some unfavorable reviews).

The Serenity has a displacement of 68,000 tons (our sailing vessel, Pioneer, weighed 13 tons!). Serenity is 820 feet long (Pioneer was 38), and carries only 1,000 passengers. It boasts nearly double the average cruise ship “space” per passenger. We made arrangements through Cruise Vacation Outlet in Florida (ask for Sharon) and were most pleased.
We’ll be taking all the cameras with the intent of publishing extensive photo and video reports upon our return.
