Logs 2002

January found us in California in search of an oceangoing sailboat. We found it -- in Florida.

It wasn’t long before we purchased the 38-foot Cabo Rico sailboat we renamed Pioneer, and moved aboard.

In April we arrived in Oriental, North Carolina for extensive boat renovations at Deaton Yacht Service. The next six months proved frustrating and expensive. While we were hugely displeased by the business ethics and policies of Deaton’s management, but the repowering and mechanical work on the boat was outstanding. There is no Cabo Rico like Pioneer!

In September we sailed to the Chesapeake for an official renaming ceremony and by October we were heading offshore, south to Florida where we provisioned Pioneer for offshore sailing.

By late in the year we were ready to head for the Dry Tortugas, and afterward to the Bahamas.
