Every year after hurricane season a fleet of individually owned sailboats departs Hampton, VA for Tortola (BVI) in the eastern Caribbean. The direct route is 1500 miles, but most vessels travel much further as they deal with the challenging Gulf Stream, prevailing winds, storms and currents.
