Mind and Heart

This section is dedicated to people suffering in the special places we have visited -- special because we left our hearts there.

In Burma, innocent villagers are attacked by their own army. The Burma Army has killed many thousands of people and has burned innumerable villages. Please read our pages on Burma.

In Nepal, a father used a machete to break his blind daughter’s arm in two places, to make her a more effective beggar.

Lepers we met trembled with joy when offered the most meager kindness.

A young mother whose baby was fatally injured during their jungle escape from the Burmese Army wept while accepting the shirt we gave her to replace the one torn to shreds during her escape into Thailand.

Saying that it opened her world, an Indonesian girl still praises us for taking her to the only Internet access on her remote island and setting up her E-mail account -- four years ago.

We met descendants of headhunters in central Borneo. They had no concept of anyplace outside their island, but received us in friendship.

A little girl whose parents were killed by pirates during their escape from postwar Vietnam stood in her only dress in an island refugee camp, pleading to come to America.

Although U.S. citizens, the Japanese parents of Don’s childhood friend were held behind barbed wire during WW2. Two decades later their son died defending America.

The Kwai River Hospital in western Thailand is an amazing place. We volunteered there early in our adventures. Clicking the Jungle Hospital button will lead you to their amazing story.
