A constant worry for sailors, freighters such as this one could crush a sailboat and not even know it. Easy to spot during the day, the challenge is avoiding them in the open ocean at night. We were lucky, our close encounters were not threatening and the freighter captains were very cooperative (via radio) in turning to avoid us.
