September 11, 2007 back at Gypsy Wagon Headquarters We have just returned from Jackson, Wyoming, where we spent several days displaying a fascinating work of art at the well-known Western Design Conference.
Renowned plains artist Kevin Red Star recently adorned a Crow-style tipi with more than forty images of horses and other symbols, turning it into a significant work of art.
He has generously agreed to contribute half of the proceeds from the auction of this item to the Carbon County Montana Historical Society, of which Don is a board member.
Red Star, and his daughter Sunny Sky Red Star, appeared at the conference to explain the symbolism of his artwork and answer questions from scores of convention attendees. He was warmly received.
Mr. Red Star has not painted a tipi for forty years, making this one unique and valuable.
The Red Star Tipi has a 16-foot slightly oval footprint and stands 14-feet to the top of the canvas. Its poles are 32-feet long.
Please find more information, the latest bid amount, and a bid form at the Carbon County Montana Museum website.
The Gypsy Wagon Expedition encountered a fast moving weather system while enroute from Montana to Jackson. This photo depicts Grand Teton peak as the system was passing by.
September 20, 2007 at HQ We have been experimenting with videos of our travels, posting them on YouTube. You can now see them here in this site! Click the VIDEOS button on the home page, or jump there fro m HERE.
September 26, 2007 in southern Montana Fall has come to Expedition Headquarters. We found it appropriate to celebrate at Fishtail, Montana.
October 1, 2007 at HQ An additional note about our new videos page. We added one of the Alte Kameraden Band in performance at Townsend, Montana’s Oktoberfest celebration.
Meanwhile, here is a photo taken at Expedition Headquarters, looking south toward northwest Wyoming.
This is a lenticular cloud formation. As air rises and falls while crossing the mountains, it becomes visible at the top of the waves, it cools to the dewpoint (where the air is holding all the moisture it can at a given temperature, and become visible. As the air drops into the troughs, it warms the becomes invisible because the relative humidity is lower
Taken at Expedition Headquarters, looking south toward the northwest Wyoming, you see the top of one arc. As the air rises and falls in that area, the cloud itself appears not to move for hours.
October 6, 2007 at Headquarters Two days ago it was 74 degrees. Today we woke up to seven inches of new snow. Worried that it would break trees that still have leaves, Becky put on her cross country skis and went around knocking snow off branches with her ski poles.
October 16, 2007 at Headquarters. We just posted a new video (VIDEOS) The Headhunters of Borneo. This is our most extensive video production yet.
October 22, 2007 at HQ: More bad news from Burma. Our friends at the Free Burma Rangers, who travel clandestinely in Burma trying to help innocent villagers being attacked by the Burma Army sent this photo and several others. IT remains a tragic situation.
November 7, 2007 at HQ Our new video (video button on home page, or click here) is a 48 second clip called Max Performance Takeoff. Also on the video page is the brand ne w Halloween in Red Lodge.
November 13, 2007 at HQ Southern Montana was hit with a major windstorm. Power poles were snapped off and one range fire grew to 20,000 acres in a few hours. In some places wind speeds hit 100 mph.
November 19, 2007 at Headquarters: The Red Star Tipi (top of page) did not bring the minimum price. It is now being offered for a set price of $55,000. Click here for more information on the Carbon County Museum web site.
Our next destination: PERU AND BOLIVIA. We are preparing to journey to South America. Details to come.
WINTER has come to Montana! This is a tree behind Expedition headquarters the morning of November 20, 2007.
It won’t be warm at altitudes above 12,000 feet in Peru, but it’ll be warmer than it is here today!
Last night the police had to deal with a grizzly bear breaking into a house.
December 2, 2007 We are deep into planning for Peru and Bolivia, finding that travel to jungle lodges in the upper Amazon is shockingly more expensive than when Don was there years ago. Our primary focus will be Cuzco/Machu Picchu, the south end of Lake Titicaca, and adjacent portions of Bolivia. The Expedition departs early in 2008.
December 6, 2007 at snowy Expedition headquarters We are well into planning for Peru and Bolivia, although Peru will be our primary foc us.
We will focus on the world’s deepest canyon, Machu Picchu (photo), Cusco and Lake Titicaca, at an altitude of 12,580 feet above sea level.
At the south end of the lake w e will enter Bolivia.
Don has been in Peru. Both nations will be new to Becky.
Our most significant destination will be Machu Picchu, in Peru. It has recently been voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
December 22, 2007 in Montana We have decided not to go to Bolivia, since their government has just instituted ridiculously high visa fees.
We’ll spend a couple of days in Lima before flying to Arequipa. From there, we’ll go to the Colca Canyon, twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the U.S. and said to be the deepest in the world (although another spot in Peru is slightly deeper).
Then we’ll fly to Cuzco and go by rail to Machu Picchu, now among the seven wonders of the modern world. We’ll linger in the Sacred Valley before taking the train to Lake Titicaca. The lake elevation is 12,580 feet msl.
We’ll fly back to Lima and take a bus to Nazca, then fly over the famous “lines” in the desert and explore the many theories how the huge figures, which can be seen only from the air, got there more than 2,000 years ago.
Back in Li ma, we’ll prepare to fly home: Atlanta, Minneapolis, Billings, Red Lodge.
We leave 2007 with this photo taken just south of Roscoe, Montana early on Christmas morning.
This is Montana’s highest mountain range. Interestingly, the highest point, Granite Peak is only 200 feet higher than Lake Titicaca in Peru.
As 2008 approaches, we wish the world peace and prosperity.
GREAT NEWS: The King of Nepal has been stripped of power, and the monarchy is to be ended. Democracy is near! The thumb of horrible oppression is being lifted.
